When people are asked what they love about Sydney, the most common answer is Sydney’s natural glorious harbour, but what they do not realise is that Sydney’s landscape is exclusive and rare. The reason Sydney looks this way is that the entire city lies on Hawkesbury sandstone.
From Sydney Harbour to the Blue Mountains, Manly to the Hunter Valley, segments of this natural rock face are apparent. Shaped by its wondrous geology, nearly all the rocks that are exposed throughout the region are sandstone. Laid down in the Triassic period, some two hundred million years ago, the sandstone that is Sydney has many gaps where water has trickled through creating breathtaking scenery. These gaps and joints in the sandstone have given Sydney a marvellous variety of surf beaches.
Hawkesbury Sandstone has been used in architecture throughout the city and a short stroll through the CBD will ensure a variety of period buildings created from carved sandstone. Uniquely Sydney, sandstone sedimentary rock is breathtaking in appearance.
Begin your journey of discovery through Radim’s sandstone artwork on canvas, which at closer look at the intricate detail, will surely evoke pleasure in the beholder.
